Awareness Day is an important fund raising event for the VWS with 100% of the proceeds assigned directly to VWS operational costs in order to provide training and equipment for members as well as maintaining vehicles for trooping members to and from the fireline. This all helps us to do what we love and believe in – combating wildfires and protecting our valuable water resources.
Most importantly, Awareness Day, as the name suggests also aims to raise awareness about the VWS and what we do, through educating the public about wildfires, and their impact on our natural heritage. Awareness Day is a fun day out, with loads of activities for the whole family.
Once again our organising team (all volunteers) are preparing for an exciting day out for the whole family…from toddlers to grandparents! There are non-stop fun activities for the children as they learn about fire, fire safety and firefighting. Fire Truck rides, Tree Climbing and Swings, Pumps and Hoses, Snake Shows, Knox Scanner Treasure Hunt as well as interesting exhibitions are all part of Awareness Day. Our volunteers and Friends of VWS Jonkershoek will provide a bustling food court and a tea garden which will satisfy your hunger or sweet tooth.
One of the highlights of the day will be the firefighting demonstration, showing what the VWS does best, as well as full aerial support from a Fire Fighting helicopter.
This year our Fire & Fynbos Awareness Day will again feature a greatly anticipated trail run, the Race for Water!. So put on your trail shoes, challenge your friends and colleagues and come and support our men and women in their Race for Water! By participating in either the or our you will be supporting a very worthy cause – assisting us in preserving our natural heritage as well as conserving our water catchment areas for future generations!
