Who can volunteer with VWS?

Anyone can volunteer, provided you:

  • are at least 18 years of age
  • are medically fit
  • have regular email and cellphone access
  • and have reliable transport to base

Where is VWS based and where does VWS have stations?

Currently Volunteer Wildfire Services is based in the Western Cape only. We have stations at:

  • Newlands (Cape Town)
  • South Peninsula (Fish Hoek, Cape Town)
  • Jonkershoek (Stellenbosch)
  • Grabouw

Please note: VWS is a volunteer organisation. As such, we do not pay any salaries, wages, or stipends for your time volunteered with us.

What qualifications/experience do I need?

No prior experience is needed, as we provide all the training to enable you to fulfill your desired role. However, being an outdoors person who likes hiking is an asset to be a firefighter. You can fill many roles besides being a firefighter though Currently Volunteer Wildfire Services is based in the Western Cape only. We have stations at:

What positions are available?

  • Fundraisers / Event planning
  • Critical Support ( Logistics, Control Room, Planning / Resource Tracking)
  • Drivers (need to have a current valid drivers licence - Code B or higher)
  • Wildland Firefighters

You can happily fill more than one role, and all members are expected to assist with VWS events.

Once you have attended an information session and filled in an application form (available only after attending an Information Session), you will undergo training in the winter months. This involves skills and fitness training in the form of hikes and scenarios. You will need to complete an orientation, training sessions and a full weekend course to qualify with us.

Further information about training, fire season and all the other requirements of joining will be available at the information meetings, there will also be members who can answer any questions you have. You need to attend an Information Session before you can fill in an application form.
