After the devastating fires in the Cape Town area in January of 2015, the need for a volunteer fire-fighting unit in the Grabow area arose. Volunteer Wildfire Services was contacted and the new Grabouw station was established. The station serves to expand the VWS operation capacity to most of the Greater Overberg area.
VWS entered into a service agreement with CapeNature and the Overberg District Municipality. Training started in 2015, and the operations were coordinated from the well-established Jonkershoek base until the new base was inaugurated.
The Grabouw station, now with a base in the Helderberg Nature Reserve, is growing steadily as they continue to assist with many local wildfires and in so doing, saving our precious water catchment areas.
